somethings off / im not risking enough
I just "released" the "I Am?" collection and it doesn't feel right. I'm stuck in a weird place. Well I think I know. I'm designing for nobody. Who's the audience? Me. I came up with a wonderful solution to this problem but it seems far away. My solution is vending in person, at pop ups, flea markets. There's some wonderful Black owned flea markets I plan on vending at, but 1. It costs a lot. 2. Money comes in slow so it may be a while until I can actually do it. Plus the bulk order for my clothing to vend at the events would run me 1k+. And what if all sizes don't sell…. Well no I believe they would sell because the work is great. But still it takes a huge investment that I'm willing to make but it will take time to round up the money.
So I'm thinking "hey, why not just build an online audience". And I realized yesterday I suck at being online. Being consistent with making videos just…idk why I can't do it. Well maybe it's because I don't know what to post and how to do it? I'm starting a job soon so money will be coming in, but what will I spend it on. I need an audience and my two options are, 1. Work, save, and invest in the Black flea experience, make some money. Now this may take time so you may not actually attend one until maybe November/December. And knowing me I can't be idle and just "wait." I love working on my dreams and making stuff.
So now option 2. Is build an online community, while I'm working and release something simple but powerful. My goal isn't to be the next Louis Vuitton, so my designing and planning out these big collections are cool when I have the funds for it, but right now I may need to focus on "small but powerful," expressions that may just be one design but you can show the process of it. What if I made a brand that just showed how things are made instead of the final product, with the build up being BTS.
This thought is coming as I'm typing so it may not be fully thought out. At the stage I'm in now, I can't afford big rollouts, so maybe I should focus on doing like a "walk with me through the journey and let's reach the destination together and if at the end you enjoy the ride you'll support it." What else do I have to lose? I'm at the bottom, so nothing can make things worse or put me BELOW, I'm at the bottom floor hahahaha. My next move kind of has to be my best move because nothing else is working. So I think I'm going to go ahead and try my best to be myself and build an online audience. I don't want to do like others and display someone who I'm not, in a way that brings me out of my comfort zone but still keeps me at peace.
I have a design idea, I made the first sample, but I didn't take people with me and people need to see that especially new brands. I can't say I want to help other brands if I don't show them that process.
Ideas: CLOTHING BRAND COLLECTION WITH ONLY $100
DESIGNING FOR CHEAP…
IDK.
LESS IS MORE.
I don't want to be another "day in the life of a brand owner" or "day 1 of starting a clothing brand." I want to be a "watch the process of OBSERVE > THINK > CREATE."
I'll show the process. I hold myself accountable for this not feeling right. This next design I will show the process, even if only 5 people pay attention, it's better than just me and my 2 cats.
